Why Would Malaysians Pretend To Be Singaporeans?
Is a question I had when I saw a reddit post about a Malaysian who pretended to be a Singaporean whenever he caused trouble overseas.
It made me think about the reasons behind why people pretend that they are from a different country. Recently, a Chinese in Ukraine shared that he had to pretend to be Japanese to avoid hate crimes and to seek shelter after Chinese social media made a mockery of Ukraine and glorified the Russian military. In the past, false citizenship documents were also made to protect Jews in Nazi-controlled Europe. These were done for fear of their safety, for fear of a life that they didn’t choose to be in.
Yet we have this Malaysian who decided that he could help tarnish the reputation of Singaporeans by being a delinquent overseas and claiming that he comes from Singapore. He even boldly claims that he “did sh*ts like this all the time”.
The difference between this and the prior-mentioned examples is that this person isn’t doing it because he’s afraid of discrimination or violence against Malaysians. He is doing this out of spite for Singaporeans.
What I would like to know is, how often does this happen? Do Malaysians always pretend to be Singaporeans when it’s to their advantage like this netter claims?
